Dena Kirkpatrick | Friday, 10:00-11:30, Dodge Show Arena
How Does She Do It? Dena Kirkpatrick Shares her Method
Has anyone watched the horses with that "smooth one-motion turn"? The turn that is unmistakably a product of barrel horse trainer, Dena Kirkpatrick? We watch great horses compete everyday, but there is something rather special about the way horses like DJ Nick Bar, Lady Perks, Imanonstop Princess, Frosty Feelins and Sugar Moon Express wrap a barrel.
Precise body positioning, flexibility and a solid foundation are a few of the key ingredients in Dena's method to training a barrel horse. Come watch Dena Kirkpatrick during the Barrelnanza Finals talk and demonstrate the key aspects of her methods that she uses to produce so many champions.
Who is Dena Kirkpatrick?
Year after year in our industry, you see outstanding futurity champions on the covers of magazines but a very small percentage are ever seen again. It is the goal of barrel horse trainer, Dena Kirkpatrick to train her horses not just for futurities, but for the rest of their lives.
"A horse's foundation is the key to the longevity of his career," she constantly preaches to students in her clinics. All the horses on Dena's resume have two things in common. Those two things are her "smooth one-motion turn" and the fact that they all took their first steps towards greatness in an open pasture just off the Caprock, in West Texas. It is not by chance that so many of these horses were and many still are successful today. Instead, it is because of the solid foundation in her training method that she is able to produce the caliber of horses she has over the last 2 decades.
One of the many elite barrel horses produced as a result of Dena's method was the black stallion, Fols Classy Snazzy who went on to qualify for the NFR and win the average with Marlene Eddleman McCrae.
Sheza Shawnee Bug, the little chestnut with a blaze face went from Dena's house on to win the National High School Championship, Collegiate Championship and had two NFR appearances under Fallon Taylor in 1997 and Kelly Yates in 2000.
That great mare was followed by many more greats such as Willy Nick Bar, Levin Lucille, Teaspoon of Honor, Chicago Moon Express, DJ Nick Bar, Imanonstop Princess and Frosty Feelins who Dena trained for Jud Little. "Frosty" had a stellar NFR performance under Denise Adams in 2006. Today, we are still seeing Frosty Feelins aka “Frosty” as she tears through the standings with Tiffany Fox.
Another graduate of this great trainer is the famous Lady Perks, who Dena trained for Grant Little and has won over $247,000 in the US and Canada with Rayel Robinson.
Plus Sugar Moon Express aka "Martha", owned and ridden by Lindsay Sears, took her first steps towards a barrel in that same open pasture.
After more than 25 years of training and competing, Dena now feels she is ready to teach and share the method that she has worked so hard to perfect. Dena has produced schools in Quebec, Australia and in the United States. She continues to teach, inspire and train a small crop of futurity colts that she hopes to see go on to be champions.
Dena Kirkpatrick's horses have gone on to have successful prorodeo and 4D careers with their owners of all ages for the past 25 years.

Want to conquer your barrel racing fears? Need help staying motivated when barrel racing seems more like a battle than a blast? Want to find that elusive “zone” where things just keep going your way?
Join Barrelracingbuzz.com for an uplifting and defining lecture on mastering the mental aspects of barrel racing with Jymmy Kay Davis and Tammy Fischer on Sunday morning, November 22 at 9:30 a.m. in the Dodge Pavilion Arena.
Both ladies have endured daunting personal tragedies, yet the two have maintained their presence in the 1D at some of the toughest barrel races in the country.
A multiple Texas Circuit Finals qualifier and former president of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, Jymmy Kay did what many thought was impossible. Her fight to save the identity of the oldest women’s professional sporting organization in the United States came at a high personal price. Though “World Champion” and “National Finals Rodeo qualifier” may not grace her resume…yet, it was through her leadership that the present generation of barrel racers might obtain those very titles under the WPRA’s banner. No matter what odds were against her, Jymmy Kay never lost her positive attitude. Nor did she let the outside world affect her performance in the arena.
Multiple National Finals Rodeo qualifier and aged event champion Tammy Fischer is by far one of the coolest customers going down the road when it comes to mental toughness. Having endured what no parent ever should, Tammy has persevered when a weaker individual may have crumbled. Tammy’s hard-charging style belays her dauntless character. The tribulations of injured horses, broken down vehicles and personal tragedy have forged a champion that will forever be in our hearts.
Please join us as these great ladies share with us their secrets for staying motivated and mentally tough at the barrel race and in life.
